Desk Flying the Microsoft Flight Simulators

Specialized key functions

In this installment I’d like to cover the use of specialized keys. These keys provide functions that will increase your enjoyment of the Flight Simulators.

The “S” Key:   The “S” key provides four views. Simply tap the key;

Normal 2D Cockpit View

Virtual Cockpit View [if one is provided]

Tower View [a distant external view]

Spot View is an outside view of the aircraft

[use your hat switch to move your view point around or above/below the aircraft]

****************************************************

When in the VIRTUAL COCKPIT, TOWER or SPOT Views, use your + or keys to zoom in or out.

****************************************************

The “W” Key: The “W” key provides 2 additional cockpit views, one with your basic instruments lined across the bottom of the screen the second just a view without any panel or instruments.

The “SHIFT + ENTER and SHIFT + BACKSPACE” KEYS: The “SHIFT + ENTER” KEYS pushed together will raise your point of view over the instrument panel. Just like raising your seat. The more times you push the keys together, the higher you go. Pressing the “SHIFT + BACKSPACE” keys together will lower your seat/view. Note: In FS2002 after looking left or right or changing views with the “S” key, you’ll have to reset your view. This does not happen in FS2004.

*************************************************

The “Alt” KEY: Using Alt+Enter, will toggle your screen between “Full Screen” and “Window” modes. When in “Full Screen”, Pressing the “Alt” key will place a menu bar across the top of the screen. These choices are the same as found in the “Starting” and “Create a Flight” screens

For example, Flights/Aircraft/World/Options/Views/Help

**********************************************************

The “WINDOWS” KEY: The “WINDOWS” key is located between the Ctrl and Alt keys at the bottom of the keyboard. Pressing the WINDOWS key will minimize the Flight Simulator placing it in the Task Tray at the bottom of the screen. This will pause your flight allowing you to do other tasks or take a latrine break. To resume your flight, simply double click the Microsoft Flight Simul Icon in the Task Tray.

The “P” KEY: The “P” key pauses your flight until pressed again.

The “SHIFT + Z” KEYS: Pressing the “SHIFT + Z” keys together will place an information strip(s) in the upper left of your screen. Pressing once will provide: Long & Lat, Altitude\MSL, Heading, Airspeed, and Wind. Pressing the second time will change the information to: Frame Rate, Pos or Negative G’s, and Fuel State in % of fuel remaining. Pressing a 3rd time will display all the info described above. Pressing a fourth time will return you to a normal screen.

Well gang, that’s the tips for this addition. As always, if you have any questions or comments, drop me a line. Some of you “Simmers” out there might have some tips you’d like to share. If so, let us know.

Happy Simming,

Steve
