Letters to the Editor

This came to me locally in Libby, Montana where I live, but I thought I’d share this with you:

Steve,  I got your name from Cyrus Lee at the hobby shop here in town. I was a Crew Chief on Phantoms for what seemed like an eternity. I recall in 1972 we had a Pedro assigned to Luke AFB, had an accident and took off its Masters head. They told us down in our section that the blades hit each other. You recall hearing that one?

But the real reason I am writing is that I am glad to see that someone is doing the little fella justice and not letting it fade away. In 1973 I was transferred to Ubon RTAFB and we had one there. Those guys down at that end of the ramp were some hard workers. That bad boy was, it seemed always on alert. I do recall one time my jet came back with hung ordinance, and when it landed it landed hot. That old D model Phantom had no intentions of stopping, but my Aircrew managed to pull the reigns in on it and in the process, she blew both mains and the wheels caught fire. Pedro beat the standby fire trucks to the jet and had it put out before they could unreel the hand lines. Bearing in mind that it was headed towards town. So it was pretty much the other end of the runway from the Pedro Pad, and they still beat the crash trucks.

Thank you guys, for saving my crew, and my jet. It has been a long time.

Marvin
